Join neighbors at the Celebration of Life memorial fundraiser for lifetime Wauwatosa resident and longtime Pabst Park neighbor, Laurie Strothenke. Laurie served the Pabst Park Neighborhood Association from the early years of the PPNA right through to coordinating our most recent neighborhood wide rummage sale. Tickets for the event can be purchased at Ted’s, Alfa Flower Shop, Welke’s Florist, through Jeff Strothenke (414-750-4660) or at the door.

The Senior Commission of Wauwatosa would like to communicate more effectively with neighborhood associations in Tosa via a Senior Liaison. The liaison does not need to be a “senior”, just someone who has a passion for helping our senior neighbors make connections with the various resources available to them. You would be the ‘keeper’ of the brochures provided by the Senior Commission. It would be a very simple volunteer position you could list on your resume. Great for a local college student or professional in need of volunteer hours. There is an upcoming training session on January 22nd from 6:30-8:30pm. Senior Liaison Program Description
The Senior Liaison Program is designed to create an environment of inclusion for all older adults that will encourage them to remain in Wauwatosa as they age. The senior liaisons will connect our older adults to the community: its people, its activities, its resources.
To accomplish this, each neighborhood association is recruiting at least one or two senior liaisons who will reach out to their neighborhoods’ older adults to make that connection. At the Jan. 22 training, they will receive information folders to distribute to seniors at neighborhood and citywide events.
This program will be a partnership between the senior liaisons and the neighborhood association. They will work together to tailor their efforts to the particular needs of the neighborhood’s older adult community. The Senior Commission will oversee this program and be an active partner in its support.

UPDATE 8/26/2021: Here is an updated report from SEWRPC. The city is hoping to host meetings this winter.

Please take a look at the proposed alternatives to help alleviate flooding associated with the Schoonmaker Creek watershed.  The area that drains to the Schoonmaker Creek is larger than you think!  2 of the 4 proposed alternatives include razing homes in the Pabst Park and Tosa East Towne Neighborhoods, so please give your feedback to the city by November 30th via their online form.  A link to the city website with all the proposed alternatives, can be found, here.

The City of Wauwatosa, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District (MMSD), and Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC) recently held an open house on the East Tosa Schoonmaker Flood Study. The extreme rain events of 2010 caused flooding throughout Southeast Wisconsin, including Wauwatosa. The City of Wauwatosa, MMSD, and SEWRPC have been working together on a comprehensive study to understand what possible investments in infrastructure could mitigate this flooding from reoccurring. SEWRPC presented these slides at the November 13 open house on the history of the flooding and Schoonmaker Creek and alternatives for infrastructure to mitigate flooding from reoccurring. Residents are encouraged to complete the comment form online by November 30 and submit their thoughts on this project. Residents can alternatively access a printable PDF version of the comment form here if they wish to mail it in.

Please note that there are no recommendations as to how to proceed at this point in the study process. Members of the public will be able to make written comment at the meeting. The Schoonmaker Creek runs from Kops Park neighborhood in Milwaukee in storm pipes underground to the Washington Highlands, where it is in an open channel until Vliet Street when it goes back underground, and eventually terminates into the Menomonee River.
